But the sea, which no one tends, is also a garden.

Why We Started Unshellfish
We make thousands of decisions every day. One after another. Many of which involve taking, consuming. Which shirt am I going to wear today? What am I going to eat for dinner? Am I going to drive to the store or order delivery?
Working professionally in accounting, marketing, and ecommerce logistics, our lives as the founding team at Unshellfish have centered around business and consumerism. We’ve supported ourselves and our families by convincing people to buy more things.
In early 2018, after a long discussion about the devastating factory farming industry (a discussion that was had over a veal dinner, nonetheless), we decided to try eating vegan. As we continued to educate ourselves on veganism & nutrition, we quickly also learned how destructive the meat industry is on the Planet and how it’s one of the largest contributing factors to global warming. The thing is, it doesn’t just stop with eating meat. In fact, essentially everything we use from our shoes, to our beds, to our phones are created from Earth’s resources & processed using Earth’s energy. Our relationship with Earth has turned parasitic. Almost all of our consumption is resource-draining and ultimately destructive to our environment.
But it doesn’t have to be this way. As people, there are a lot of items we need to sustain a healthy life, and many items we want to make us happy. All of this can be okay, if it’s done thoughtfully (think #circulareconomy). Where we falter, is succumbing to marketing tactics and societal pressures that convince us to buy waste-ridden products which we don’t need and hardly want. Products that ultimately take resources away from our planet and likely end up in landfills sooner than we intended.
At Unshellfish, we believe that our Planet is beautiful and rich in resources that allow all creatures to thrive. Our land and our oceans are the ultimate giver – constantly providing resources that sustain our lives. By harnessing these resources sustainably, with a focus on giving back when we take, we can evolve our parasitic relationship with Earth. The choices we make each day can be mutually beneficial to both us and the Planet, (check out this National Geographic piece The Art of Living Together).
Vegan now for over 5 years, we decided to create delicious food from superfood ingredients that are harvested in ways that benefit the planet. We choose to fill our plates with less destructive (and hopefully some constructive) foods. Our mission is to enable and encourage others to make better simple daily decisions.
Unshellfish living is making concious decisions every day that are better the planet and better for ourselves.
We’re not perfect and we will never claim to be. But we firmly believe that even a few small changes can have a massive impact.
